What is GSM?

GSM meaning or GSM full form is Gram per Square Meter (g/m2). It’s a standard unit used to measure the weight per unit area of a piece of fabric or paper. It’s widely used in apparel manufacturing as well as printing and packaging industry.

Why Use Our GSM Calculator?

Our GSM Calculator is fast, accurate, and supports multiple units (meters, millimeters, inches) to suit your needs. The tool converts measurements to meters internally to provide the GSM value instantly.

How Does the GSM Calculator Work?

First, determine a piece of fabric as the sample size. Next, measure the width, length & weight of the sample. Finally, put the values in the field, and click calculate to get instant results.

GSM Formula

To calucate fabric GSM manually simply put your values in this formula –

GSM = Wg * 10,000 / (L * W)
Wg = Weight of the sample (in gram)
L = Length of the sample (in cm)
W = Width of the sample (in cm)

FAQ

GSM is a key factor in determining the density and durability of a fabric, influencing its characteristics. Understanding GSM helps in selecting the right fabric for specific applications, ensuring durability, comfort, and cost efficiency in textile production.

The GSM of a fabric can affect the feel and drapability of a fabric by determining its weight and thickness. A higher GSM indicates a thicker, more durable fabric suitable for winterwear, while a lower GSM indicates a lighter and potentially less durable material, generally used for casualwear.

GSM measures the weight of a fabric in grams per square meter, while thread count measures the number of threads per square inch. These measurements give different information about the quality and characteristics of a fabric and are often used in combination to determine fabric’s overall quality.

Choosing the right GSM for you depends on activity, season, types of apparel & many more. Here’s a guide for better understanding.
